JULIANA'S CALLIGRAPHY & ILLUMINATION PAGE
My foray into the world of calligraphy began when my great-grandmother saw me using a ball-point pen, bearing down heavily on my downstrokes and lightly on my upstrokes, to try to make my own handwriting look prettier.  She went to the cabinet and dug out a Miles Spelling Book, published in 1853, which has among itsfront few pages examples of all those beautiful Spencerian letters.  I have that book still and although it's not in the best condition it will always be one of my most special treasures.  (It also instilled in me a love for old books - academic and fictional - but that's a story for another time....)

As time went on I developed my own personal hand, with which I wrote letters using a cartridge fountain pen and a copperplate nib for many years.  I also learned a pseudo (modernized) uncial hand in my late teens, and I used to be able to write in runes as well, although I've not done so for so long that I can't remember them now.

Then we joined the SCA.  After seeing some of the scrolls done by others and playing a little on some pre-prints, I decided to give C&I a try.  While I wanted to be as authentic as possible, I was hesitant to try dip pens as I'd always had difficulty with smudging and thick letters using those pens...  Then someone shared the secret how to fill a dip pen without actually dipping it, and now I'll never go back to cartridge pens!

Eventually I hope to post pictures of some of my projects here on the website.  Until then, I hope you have fun exploring my C&I links.  If there is a C&I website for which you'd like to see a link here, please e-mail me & I'll add it to the site as soon as I can.
